Christoph M. Schmidt

Christoph M. Schmidt is President of the RWI - Leibniz Institute for Economic Research and Professor of Economic Policy and Applied Econometrics at the Ruhr-Universität Bochum, Germany. Before he held a full Professorship of Econometrics at the University of Heidelberg, Germany. He studied economics at the University of Mannheim, Germany, and Princeton University, USA where he also received his PhD. He habilitated at the Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München, Germany.

Christoph M. Schmidt is Chairman of the German Council of Economic Experts and served as Member of the Enquete-Commission “Growth, Well-Being and Quality of Life” of the German Bundestag. Further he acts as Member of the National Academy of Science and Engineering (acatech), Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Max Planck Institute for Tax Law and Public Finance in Munich as well as Member of the Scientific Advisory Board of the Fritz Thyssen Foundation. He is Research Fellow of the Centre for Economic Policy Research (CEPR London).

Christoph M. Schmidt received the Gustav-Stolper-Award of the German Economic Association. During his studies, he was awarded a Princeton University Fellowship, the Alfred P. Sloan Doctoral Dissertation Fellowship and was Fellow of the Habilitation Program of the German Research Foundation (DFG).

Christoph M. Schmidt was co-editor of the German Economic Review and the Journal of Population Economics. He published articles in journals such as the Review of Economics and Statistics and the Journal of Public Economics.

Research Interests

Applied econometrics and a broad spectrum of economically relevant topics, in particular macroeconomics as well as energy, health and labor market and migration economics.

Christoph M. Schmidt joined CReAM as an external fellow in April 2017.
